As of late, nursing has become one of the most in-demand jobs. The increase in number of elderly in the US has caused the need for nurses to surge. With this glaring reality, colleges and universities have responded to the need by creating accelerated nursing schools. Accelerated nursing schools offer accelerated nursing programs which drastically cut the amount of time spent by nursing students in the classroom. This is great for individuals who want to earn an accelerated nursing degree in the quickest time possible. Accelerated second degree nursing schools offer the fast-track nursing degree which takes about 11-13 months to complete. What this means is that class hours are longer with some not having breaks between classes.
Accelerated nursing schools, not entirely different from full-time BSN nursing schools, can offer quality nursing education to those who look for it. However, with the shortened time span given to complete the course, accelerated nursing programs enforce the requirements meticulously. Colleges and universities offering such programs do this to ensure that their graduates can compete with graduates from full-time nursing programs. Some nursing schools that offer accelerated nursing require applicants to have completed a bachelor’s degree, the course does not matter. Other schools only require applicants to have credits in Biology, Nutrition, Human Growth and Development, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics. Some other schools also require their applicants to meet a certain cut-off with regards to undergraduate grade point average. However, the criteria that applicants need to meet depend on the school of choice.
University of Washington - University of Washington ranks one as the best accelerated nursing schools in the US, according to one ranking body. It offers a full-time accelerated nursing program which students can finish in just five quarters of school time. Deadline for application to the program is in October to get into the summer semester.
University of Pennsylvania - Next on the list is UPenn School of Nursing which offers accelerated nursing in just five or six semesters. Applicants are given a choice between summer or fall matriculation. UPenn is ranked third according to the "U.S. News & World Report" rankings.
Johns Hopkins University - After UPenn comes Johns Hopkins University. JHU offers two accelerated nursing programs, one taking 13 months to complete and the other taking 21 months to finish. Applicants to the 13-month program need to submit their applications by early November while applicants to the 21-month program can send in their applications by November and continues until January.
University of Michigan - University of Michigan-Ann Arbor follows after JHU according to the "U.S. News & World Report" rankings of accelerated nursing schools. The nursing school offers an accelerated, second-career degree that students can finish in four terms.
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill - UNC-Chapel Hill ties with the University of Michigan for the same place. UNC-Chapel Hill also offers an accelerated, second degree BSN program that students can complete in four or six semesters.
